Dejavu Gallery and Antecedent Projects presented The Subtle Image, a survey of contemporary artists whose works evoke subtle expressions of the subconscious mind and spirituality. This exhibit was created in response to Dejavu’s legacy as the site of the mid-century Bodley Gallery, renowned for exhibiting pivotal artists such as surrealist Max Ernst. The Subtle Image expanded on Surrealism’s exploration of the subconscious. Works on view centered on syncretizing spiritual energy with subconscious desires, privileging a holistic vision of human experience over the fragmented view of psychoanalysis. Taking cues from the color palette of Matisse and the psychic energy of German Expressionism, works by these twelve diverse artists encompassed painting, collage, and drawing. The Subtle Image was a rich and nuanced journey into work by artists who are making waves in contemporary art through the lens of spirituality and the supernatural.
